J. Edgar Hoover would be proud,

TPM Muckraker: This morning’s newspapers are ablaze with the outrageous news that the FBI was trying to get its hands on over 200 boxes of files once belonging to legendary investigative journalist Jack Anderson.

What the papers didn’t report was the truly ugly extent to which the bureau has gone to achieve their goal — such as manipulating Anderson’s elderly widow to sign a document she apparently didn’t understand.

The rest of us should be ashamed.

Might I add that the administration’s novel legal theory here is that it is illegal for any of us to possess a classified document.

How long until we see the first sting operations against reporters in which a “source” offers to pass them secret documents and then the FBI swoops down on them?

ICANN NomCom Issues Call for Future Board Members

The ICANN Nominating Committee, of which (will wonders never cease) I am a part, has issued its 2006 Formal Call for Statements of Interest for the following positions:

While I’m happy to answer what questions I can, please note that in order to be considered for one of these jobs you have to use ICANN’s official procedure for submitting a Statement of Interest.

Much of what the NomCom does is covered by very strong confidentiality rules, so I will not be posting much (if anything) about this other than the official announcements. I do welcome both public and private suggestions about what sort of person would be good for these jobs — the key thing, though, is to get good people to volunteer for them, so tell your friends and associates.

Research Assistant Needed

My regular research assistant has had the temerity to graduate, so I need a summer substitute. If things work out, the job might well continue into next year. You’ll be doing general research online and on paper, and helping with my current projects.

The ideal candidate will, in addition to reading this blog, have some experience with computers. Bonus points for some experience with unix and html, as I plan to do some computer stuff this summer and could use some hand-holding and script-writing. And of course an interest in Internet law and privacy, which are likely to be my main writing topics.

Interested UM law students (sorry, I can’t pay others) should give me a photocopy of your c.v., transcript and a short writing sample, either by email or by dropping it off with my secretary. I welcome 1L applicants every bit as much as 2Ls.

Ideally I’d like 10-20 hours of your time per week, but the exact amount and the number of weeks is negotiable. The pay, however, is inflexibly set by the law school at $ 8/ hour.
