I’d recommend an alternate reader and uploading the books via app (e.g., I have a nook color hacked into running android and upload content using Calibre or Dropbox). The convenience of the kindle is amazon’s whispernet, which is how the manage/remotely wipe the content; remove whispernet and you lose the one-click convenience but also the worry that your recently bought book will disappear.
