Nonsense...I have a one of the 1st 10GB models and while the battery is toast is makes a nice backup drive. The wife's 2nd gen is going strong, and my nano shows no signs of tiring out.

As an AAPL shareholder I suggest you buy two. ;-)

I've had my iPod for over three years and the only problem I've ever had is that it occasionally needs to be reset, which is a simple process of pressing and holding the menu and play buttons simultaneously. When it needs to be reset it looks like it is dead. It is completely non-responsive.

In fact, the first time it happened to me, I thought I needed to get a new one. I strongly suspect that a lot of people wrongly believe their iPods have died when all that is needed is a simple reset. And given that journalists are pretty awful in their fact-checking these days, it's not hard to understand that they run with a worst-case interpretation of the story rather than digging down to get their facts straight.

Also, Apple is rather more lenient in their replacement policies than most journalists are willing to admit, as I discovered last year when my iPod first needed a reset. I wrote about it here.

My wife just gave me a new iPod to replace my three year old 20 gig model, which was still going strong.

Dont' do it, don't buy an iPod! You're right, they break. I went through two in less than a year and had almost barely used them. I have a friend whose iPod gave up service just after the warranty had expired. There are great alternatives, go with those. I just use my Treo as an mp3 player. Another neat possibility is something like the Olympus WS 320M that I just bought for digital voice recording. I bought it for research purposes (to record interviews), but it conveniently doubles as an mp3 player. It works with a simple USB that's plug-and-play, no wires or anything required. It's "only" 1GB so no, it won't hold thousands of songs, but do you really listen to thousands of songs every day (is that even physically possible)? I've been very happy with it. Funny, many people comment thinking it's one of the new iPods. Nope, it's just a $170 voice recorder/mp3 player.

Sorry, I have to disagree. I'm on my 3rd IPod and I've bought a grand total of five of them for gifts, none have failed. The battery in the first one was replaced under the replacement program. I travel constantly and haven't had a problem using my IPod(s) anywhere. My only complaint is that normally after I buy something from Apple, they introduce a better model!
