Dear President Shalala,
I urge you in the strongest possible terms to treat humanely in every
way the students now staging a sit-in at the University of Miami. I
believe that they should be negotiated with respectfully and that all
workers at the UM should get a living wage--more than has until now been
granted--and they be allowed to vote on the issue of unionization by a
card check.
As a life-long Miamian, I urge that you handle the present situation
in a peaceful manner and recognize the great value to the community that
well-paid workers and active, caring students represent. Thank you very
much.
Best,
Steve
