Has there ever been a time in history when one branch of government had so much information and power, ostensibly for one purpose, when that information and power wasn’t used for other less palatable purposes? Information and power not subject to checks and balances has always been abused.
And is the ostensible purpose even effective?
What is the point of a constitution and legal system if those are ignored whenever people are afraid? Isn’t one of the purposes of such frameworks to precisely prevent us from giving into knee-jerk emotional responses that fail us later?
Why should we trust an executive branch that has over the decades committed such massive crimes against humanity?
