Blocking Ads In Firefox

One thing I have not liked about firefox is that it doesn't play that nice with AdSubtract, the ad-blocking proxy I've come to rely on. It works OK with 2.x, but not great under win98se, and really lousy under win xp. And Firefox's relationship with Adsubtract 3.0—which doesn't claim to support anything other than IE, a really retrograde move—is even worse.

All of a sudden, I think I've found the solution. Google took me to dennis.ca, where there is not only a pointer to a firefox plugin for ad blocking, but also a list of adblock filters and host files to prime the pump. I just hope it works half as well as advertised.

1296 Feeds

This Scobliezer guy says he reads 1296 feeds to cull items for his blog. Although it seems he mostly just looks at headlines. And there I was worrying because my list of feeds is almost four screens long…

Hmmm…I wonder if my headlines are as informative as they could be.

Incidentally, I'm a very happy user of a server-side blog aggregating tool called feed on feeds. It's not pretty, and I have a wishlist of features for the perfect version of it, but it's very very useful if you read blognews from more than one machine.

Fun With Firefox

I've just discovered that Firefox has 29 (!) themes available for download. I just installed the Nautilus 0.8 theme, and it put a smile on my face, which is quite an achievement before the third cup of coffee.

Firebird –> Firefox

Mozilla's lightish weight fast and neat browser, Firebird 0.7, is now being replaced (and renamed) by Firefox 0.8. And it's starting to feel like a finished product too. I still use Mozilla on my desktop, but I've switched to Firebird Firefox and Thunderbird (email client) on my laptop.

Why Firefox?

It's similar to Firebird. It's easy to remember. It sounds good. It's unique. We like it. And we weren't able to find any other project or company even remotely similar to a web browser that uses the same name.

What's a Firefox?

A “Firefox” is another name for the red panda.

Will this name be permanent?

We sure hope so. We've learned a lot about choosing names in the past year (more than we would have liked to). We have been very careful in researching the name to ensure that we will not have any problems down the road. We have begun the process of registering our new trademark with the US Patent and Trademark office.

How will this affect other Mozilla projects?

Having dealt with this issue, we'll be working out a more detailed branding strategy in the coming months. The branding document will be updated accordingly.

But I hate the new name. It's stupid.

Our editors are trying to figure out whether this is a question. Of course not everyone will like the new name, especially at first. We're confident most people will quickly get used to it. New names have a way of sounding terrible at first. If you're unhappy with the new name, consider trying out the many improvements we've made in the latest release of our browser – we hope that'll make you feel better. After all, what's most important is how the thing works, not what it's called.

I just hope Thunderbird doesn't become “Thunderfox”….

Linux-Based Windows XP Look-Alike; Tweaking XP

User Friendly is one of the three online comic strips I read every day. Set at an imaginary ISP it would be funny to anyone who uses a computer, but it's also full of tech in-jokes, especially Linux and DNS ones. But until I read today's strip I never thought of it as a source of tech information. This was, however, the first I'd heard of XPDE, an open source attempt to create an Windows XP-like desktop environment for (newbie?) linux-users. Just version 0.4 so far (those Linux guys insist on meaningful version numbers…if it were a windows-based product want to bet it would be called 1.1 if not 3.0?), but the screenshots look pretty good.

Today's User Friendly also mentions the slow pop-up of the Start menu under XP. As it happens, I just fixed this problem (I think) on Caroline's computer two days ago. The instructions on how to do so are probably hidden somewhere in the online Microsoft help system, but I don't know where. It involves lowering the value of one registry key, MenuShowDelay. You can find instructions towards the bottom of this useful Windows XP tweaks page. I haven't tried all the listed tweaks yet, but probably will.

GNU Project is 20 Today!

The GNU (“GNU's not Unix”) Project turns 20 today. (The Initial Announcement – GNU Project is actually a few weeks older than that).

Call it what you will, Richard Stallman, and GNU and the copyleft idea, are important to our long-run wealth and freedom (as in 'freedom of choice' and 'freedom of action' at least and, it increasingly appears, also as in 'liberty'). Read all about it.

Update: Here are Richard Stallman's thoughts on the occasion.
