CIA unmasks officer killed in 2003: The CIA revealed the identity of a clandestine officer killed six years ago and dedicated the 90th star on its memorial wall.

CIA Director Leon Panetta on Monday identified the officer killed in Ethiopia in 2003 as Gregg Wenzel, 33.

According to public accounts, Wenzel was a foreign service officer at the State Department. He was killed by a drunk driver in Addis Ababa who was convicted but as of 2008, had not been caught.

Wenzel was a member of the first clandestine service training class to graduate after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, was a former public defender in Florida and an Ironman triathlete.

Wenzel grew up in Monroe, N.Y., and earned a law degree from the University of Miami law school.

There used to be a very large CIA presence on campus, but it was, we thought, aimed at Latin America. Then the funding stopped, and (AFAIK) they mostly went away.

Oh? Clandestine recruitment from your campus?

Fun stuff. Maybe you got to rub elbows with the scumbag thugs who tortured others, or killed dissidents. Heros, each and every one of them. Right?

Sorry to say, as an expat, I have little respect for the CIA.

The reason is simple. Well, there are two reasons.

Reason one is very simple: The CIA does not respect American citizens when they are outside the United States. I am subject to illegal investigations, due to the high level of (quality, mind you) intelligence employed by the CIA. I have no protections against them. Therefore, they get a big ‘f**k you’ from me, as any sensible person would understand.

In other words, if you give me, as an expat, no protection, then do not expect me to give you any support, or even the time of day.

Second point is flat easy, given the numerous mistakes that the CIA has made over the years, in Iran and really a bunch of other places, why shouldn’t we just shut the Agency down completely? Wouldn’t that be a net gain? Really?

No love for you. Cuz you ain’t got no respect for me.
