I've Been Joe-Jobbed Again
Someone has emailed the entire universe a series of cheap ads for tawdry goods forging my email address in the “from” line. It is not the first time I’ve been ‘joe jobbed’ but it seems to be an even more thorough job than in the past.
As a result, I’m getting a flood of mailed bounces, rejections, spam complaints and the like. No doubt many systems will now blacklist my address. And so on.
And it makes finding the real mail a bit of a needle in a haystack problem. Not to mention that if I tried to mail you, misspelled something, and it really bounced, I’ll never notice.
If you need to reach me in the next few days, or more, please consider the phone if I don’t reply.

I don’t know whether you‘re in a mood to reflect right now—wouldn’t surprise me if you’re too angry at the moment. But speaking for myself, I can’t get angry about joe-jobs anymore. It’s like getting angry at an earthquake, or a tornado... or for you down in Florida, I s’pose: getting angry at a hurricane.
I guess I’ve thoroughly dehumanized all spammers.
I don’t know what the EFF’s position is on spam issues anymore. From a decade ago, I do recall some sharp disagreements over spam issues with several people influential in the EFF. But it appears to me that positions have evolved over the years.
My thoughts have certainly changed over the years—in part because of those sharp disagreements ;-). But more due to watching the changes in the social, political, and technological landscape of the ’net.
Posted by: anti-spammer at April 19, 2008 06:01 PMI suspect it is a deliberate DoS attack against people who have been involved in ICANN. Other folk made similar complaint in the past couple of days and ICANN is the common link.
Deployment of BATV technology allows joe job bounces to be completely eliminated.
