I saw this about half an hour ago, and mentioned "A Handmaid's Tale" to my roommate, for the 232834 time since November.

As Texas Rep. Senfronia Thompson (my new political girlfriend) pointed out, this is an excellent use of their time. Now if you will excuse me, I have to go buy a muumuu.

I was defending this over at ObWi a while back. Yellow-dog liberal Dem that I am, I still don't see why 14-year-old girls should be simulating intercourse for an audience in the name of "cheerleading."

That said, I now look forward to horror stories about inept enforcement.

Hey, even better is House Bill 772, which prohibits nudist youth camps. Of course, there are no such camps in Texas, but what the heck? It's not like we have any other issues, like budgetary problems or school financing, for our legislators to be worrying about!

Shouldn't a 14yo girl's behaviour be her parent's concern? Even for cheerleading - the parents can join the school board, keep their kids out of cheerleading, etc. We don't need a law for everything.

This is just another stupid distraction bill.

Underform, I'm all for parents keeping their kids straight (so to speak), but when some parents abdicate their responsibilities and subject other parents' kids to sexually suggestive "cheerleading," I'm not sure that rule works any more.

Anyway, I'm not so preachy that I don't get a kick out of this quote from the sponsoring legislator:

"Everyone has their own ideas about what a sexual movement is. but if you're an adult and you've been involved in sex, you know it when you see it," Edwards said.

You can't make this stuff up.

Women having sex, or thinking about having sex, or looking like they are thinking about having sex, completely frighten many Republicans. Maybe this profound aversion will cause them to go extinct? We can only hope.

It's all fun and games until the inspector finds a broken hymen and boots one of the girls. Then it's a whole lot of legal rigamarole about broken hymen girl's rights and self esteem. The next Republican Debutante daughter with hymen issues will of course make a huge foofooraw about hymen rights, hymenism, etc. Remember, when broken hymens are outlawed, only outlaws will have broken hymens.
