Experimental Comments Feed

I’ve added an experimental comments feed suitable for the RSS blogreading tool of your choice. Comments recursively welcomed.

If this works I suppose I’ll feedburner it in due course. Minor problem with that idea is that when I post new stuff to discourse.net, I can set MT to ping feedburner, telling it to come and grab the new RDF & XML but I don’t think there’s an obvious way to make the comments feed do that, so the comments feed will lag somewhat.

Generally, I’ve been finding the blog is getting slower as the database grows. Some updates, and especially attempts to use MT-Blacklist to kill large amounts of spam, cause timeout errors when I exceed some limit set by my host…a limit they won’t increase unless I get a box of my own, which would raise my costs tenfold. I gather this slowdown is a known MT 2.6.x behavior. For now I intend to live with it. In the fullness of time some sort of major upgrade or migration may be in order. In my copious spare time. Ha.

You might want to look at MT 3.11 and it's dynamic publishing. It needs htaccess, mod_rewrite, and php, but it really cuts down on rebuild times.

Looks good, but .... Licensing issues. Off 2.6 I run several blogs, including a private one one just for family members. Sometimes I run blogs for classes. Or, I run them for my wife's classes. Currently, I run one for a faculty committee.

So I'd need a personal unlimited license ($100). And the school (or I) would need to pay $40 * 4 classes, at least. Then I have to probably redo, at least re-test all my customized templates. Upgrade -- probably lose some of -- all my myriad plugins. There's a lot going on in this page. It would be a job to upgrade, I fear. No doubt going to Wordpress, which is delightfully free as well as open source, would be even harder...

Alternately, I pay the $100 for this blog, which is the only one with high traffic and data, but leave all the others on 2.6. Still have the tough upgrade issues, and now I have a forked maintance path. Yuk. But it may come to that.

Yeah, sounds like there is no perfect solution until you get an infinite supply of free time ;-)
