If someone can tell me how to change the code so that video doesn’t start automatically, I’ll be happy to do it. Play is set to “false” but it plays anyway.

Hey, at least she’s got a kid going to Iraq.

That’s more than you can say for El Busho.

Lisa Graham Keegan, the official adviser on Education for John McCain, called the people learning to be teachers in our Schools of Education nothing but a bunch of ‘low-achieving students’. Here’s the quote:

Sen. McCain wants to recruit from the top of universities in subject areas — math and science — not necessarily through colleges of education that, quite frankly, recruit low-achieving students.

The vast majority of our teachers come from Colleges of Education. The vast majority are conscientious and willing to devote their lives to the education of our young. Yet here we have McCain’s official adviser “quite frankly” writing them all off as “low-achieving”. Is this the kind of person you would have as your adviser on Education?

  4. This is probably the most interesting, in depth, political blog I have ever found! thanks 🙂

You might want to look at the stats for the students who enter colleges of education to learn to be teachers. They ARE the low achievers, as far as the metrics of scholastic achievement go. If you rank all the various majors by their SAT and various Grad test scores, education majors are almost always at, or just above the bottom. Study after study, year after year, shows the same data. Teacher wannabees are just low achievers in the great scheme of measuring people by how well they do on academic tests. (you can decide for yourself whether that matters to you or not)

Now that’s not to say that there aren’t great teachers that really affect our children positively, but most don’t, and most could never manage to get into one of the really tough thinking professional schools like medicine, law, business, etc.

Don’t confuse a person’s willingness to self-sacrifice, with a person that is the best choice to self-sacrifice. Doesn’t mean politicians need to go around bad-mouthing them, but they are hardly, on average, the shinning lights of academic achievement.

On the “deer in the headlights moment,” has anyone bothered to notice that Gibson doesn’t know the Bush doctrine either – since he got it wrong. Though it’s hardly to be expected that anyone so busy kissing Obama’s shoes would know what it is, since there have been (as I count them) four different evolutions of the doctrine. Gibson’s was one of the old ones (the third actually). The current Bush doctrine, from his second innaugeral speach is “The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands. The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world.”

BTW, for the historically challanged (or teachers), this actually comes from JFK (who was not a liberal in the modern sense of the word), who said that the United States “shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” It draws also from the Truman doctrine of March 1947 and from Wilson’s 14 points.

The issue isn’t video from youtube, which works like it should. Rather the issue is a flash video calling something called “immersiveplayer”. The code I cut from the site offering it (that is, I copied from a place that invited you to take the code to embed the video, rather than copying the html from the site itself) includes the text : play=”false” which you would think means no autostart, but it starts anyway.

I’ve quoted the code at issue below, with left and right brackets changed to curly so it won’t execute or trigger comment filters

    {span class=”caps”}USA.{/span}{/b} {br}{br}{center}{object classid=”clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000″ codebase=”http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0″ id=”embeddedplayer” width=”320″ height=”305″}{param name=”movie” value=”http://gannett.a.mms.mavenapps.net/mms/rt/1/site/gannett-wcsh-wlbz-3332-pub01-live/current/immersiveplayer/immersive/client/embedded/embedded.swf”}{param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”}{param name=”allowScriptAccess” value=”always”}{param name=”scale” value=”noscale”}{param name=”salign” value=”LT”}{param name=”bgcolor” value=”#000000″}{param name=”wmode” value=”window”}{param name=”FlashVars” value=”playerId=immersiveplayer&referralObject=850878100&referralPlaylistId=playlist&adServerBasePath=http://gcirm.gannett-tv.gcion.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_sx.ads&adPositionId=x25&adSiteId=video.wcsh6.com&gpaperCode=gntbcstwcsh&marketName=Portland, ME&division=broadcast&pageContentCategory=immersiveplayer&pageContentSubcategory=immersiveplayer”}{embed type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” src=”http://gannett.a.mms.mavenapps.net/mms/rt/1/site/gannett-wcsh-wlbz-3332-pub01-live/current/immersiveplayer/immersive/client/embedded/embedded.swf” id=”embeddedplayer” pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer” menu=”false” quality=”high” play=”false” name=”immersiveplayer” allowfullscreen=”true” allowscriptaccess=”always” scale=”noscale” salign=”LT” bgcolor=”#000000″ wmode=”window” flashvars=”playerId=immersiveplayer&referralObject=850878100&referralPlaylistId=playlist&adServerBasePath=http://gcirm.gannett-tv.gcion.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_sx.ads&adPositionId=x25&adSiteId=video.wcsh6.com&gpaperCode=gntbcstwcsh&marketName=Portland, ME&division=broadcast&pageContentCategory=immersiveplayer&pageContentSubcategory=immersiveplayer” width=”320″ height=”305″}{/object}

Unfortunately, while I can do HTML at least OK if not better, I’m not conversent in flash or whatever this is.

  7. Google Chrome Forum says:

Michael, i was able to modify the code and make it not auto play but it “did” involve a fair bit of monkeying around.. Probably too much for the average person to do just to make a blog post.

Probably the easiest thing to do when proprietary players like this won’t behave, is to download the video using one of the many sites or tools available then reupload it to YouTube or Vimeo.com (who has a really nice player i might add) if the owner of the video will allow.

Sorry i couldn’t help, but it was a bit more long winded than play=”false”

  8. joe says:

Please, please, please tell me how to modify the code. I’m having the same issue and it is driving me nuts!!!! I’ve taken out and put back in just about everything and I still can’t figure it out.
    Thanks so much!
    Joe

  9. I just want to know where “Alittlereality” got his/ her information about the statistics showing that teachers are low achievers.

  10. I am hopeful that we will all see the changes that have been promised by Obama.
