Worst. President. Ever.

George W. Bush has set a new record of unpopularity:

Bush reached an unwelcome record. By 64%-31%, Americans disapprove of the job he is doing. For the first time in the history of the Gallup Poll, 50% say they “strongly disapprove” of the president. Richard Nixon had reached the previous high, 48%, just before an impeachment inquiry was launched in 1974.

This seems as good an occasion as any to re-open the debate started here almost two years ago. In Discourse.net: Worst President Ever? I asked if GWB was the worst President ever. Readers were pretty persuasive that he was only a runner-up to James Buchanan.

But a lot has happened in two years: torture, politicization of every office of government, beating drums of war with Iran, poor management of relations with Pakistan, the dollar collapse, the deficit, the increasing inequality, the vetoes, the quagmire in Iraq (and the stop-losses), the forgetting of Afghanistan and New Orleans, one could go on and on and on.

So now I am prepared to remove the question mark.

What say you all?

  1. The more important point is that they’re split on attacking Iran. 46% think we should bomb Iran if they don’t do what our government wants. Stupid.
And there’s no reason to trust a democratic administration.

  2. brat says:

Yup, Bush beats Buchanan by a country mile. He’s wins on the combination of mendacity. bellicosity and stunning incompetence.

  3. Mitch Guthman says:

Agreed. Bush is the worst of the worst.

  4. Lindata says:

Bush has certainly demostrated the power of the POTUS. Before GWB I would not have thought that one man could f… so much up so quickly.

  5. Richard says:

Count me as in agreement that Bush is the worst president ever. I have been saying so since he took office. What worries me more than I like to admit is that I see so many signs that suggest he is not planning to go anywhere a year from January. A pretty good case can be made for the idea that this whole economic mess is deliberate so that the neocons will have an excuse to declare an emergency and suspend the constitution should the public elect a president who will not do their bidding.

    The Guardian

“He denied ever being asked to fabricate evidence, adding: ‘We’re not asked to manufacture information, we’re asked to find it. But if a detainee wants to tell me what I want to hear so he can get out of jail… you know what I’m saying.’

Other military intelligence officials in Iraq refused to comment, but one said: ‘The message is, “Got to find a link with Iran, got to find a link with Iran.” It’s sickening.'”

  7. SEO says:

Imagine what the stats would of looked like before Bush threw a few million at “correcting” them.

I’d like to know what you’re seeing, because I’m not seeing any of that.

In particular, a popular term limited out President might aspire to doing some such, but one who’s this unpopular? More popular Presidents than Bush have been assassinated, I doubt he’d last a month past making such a declaration.

  9. Well, Woodrow Wilson (with the help of puppetmaster Edward Mandell House) sold America to the bankers, but that doesn’t qualify as treason under Article III, Section 3 of the US Constitution. I’m of the persuasion that a War on Terror that targets US citizens with illegal wiretaps, suspensions of habeas corpus and posse comitatus, and extra-judicial prosecutions, just might qualify as “levying war” against the United States.

  10. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that Islamic extremists hate our freedoms.

  11. amike says:

I hate to think of Bush being best at anything, even best at being worst. But I’m afraid he is, he is, he certainly is.

  12. Wait until a US Dollar is worth 50 Canadian cents. Then you can pull the velvet cover off the worst president ever trophy.

  13. Thomas says:

Michael, you agree with people who think a coup is imminent. Ordinarily that would give one pause, but I imagine that on the left it now means thinking seriously about the dangers. A peculiar sort of sickness.

Also, my goldfish died. Don’t forget to add that to the list.

  14. michael says:

Michael, you agree with people who think a coup is imminent.

If that was meant to be a question, then the answer is “no”. If it was meant to be interpretive, it’s erroneous.

Election-stealing, maybe. Riggable voting machines, definitely (whether they get used to rig votes is almost impossible to prove, and it is equally hard to prove the negative, which is exactly the design flaw that outrages).

Outright coups, in the sense of some sort of suspension of the elections, nope.

  15. Srinivas says:

A bunch of jokers on this forum who cannot think long term; A bunch who will collectively pee when osama and his ideology forments trouble all around the world. I feel sad for the free world that jokers like you are encouraged. Say a word against the jihadis and you cowards know that they will get you.

so america and bush a soft target…..

think about the numerous humans that have lost their lives around the world – India, Thailand, Philliphines, Somalia, Sudan, Russia (by chechen rebels)….etc etc………..GW Bush wasnt responsible…..it was the jihadis………u cowards wake up and realize how lucky you are…..you have a president who can stand up against the jihadis……….no unlike India’s prime minister who after every bombing and a few hundred deaths officially declares “Muslim first” as a official policy………

  16. CAIR-bot says:

Srinivas you just committed a hate crime. Please provide the name of your employer so we can boycott him and have you fired. Then we’re going to sue you. Repeat after me: jihad is peace, jihad is peace, jihad is peace. Ahmedinijad is the best president ever.

  17. west_rhino says:

Were not that congress’ popularity is lower and begs the cognate of worst legislature ever, I might agree with you. OTOH, if the main stream media’s vomitus accolades are what those polled base their opinons upon, we could be counting chads in a poll measuring motives of “news” agencies.

  19. moon says:

CAIR-bot, thanks for proving srinivas right. Yes, CAIR may even think of making Ahmedinijad the “best president” ever. Good luck to Americans who hate America, who hate Bush; Feel sorry for their kids as they would not have the freedom that the parents enjoyed- for anything against jihad would be seen as a hate crime; anything against freedom would be seen as being righteous.

  20. Jeff says:

Not only is Bush the worst President, he will most likely retain that title for many decades to come – assuming his actions have not so crippled this country that we will look something like Great Britain after World War II.

Being a historian, I must ask – How did such a person as the likes of George Bush ever get elected, or has the abysmal state of public dis-education in this country come home to roost? But, then, I suppose it proves the old saying – anyone can become President.
