Billmon Peers Into His Crystal Ball

Billmon has seen the future and it’s not pretty:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Two key U.S. senators said on Friday they will launch a bipartisan coverup of what they described as an “immense, but probably unavoidable failure” of the government response to Hurricane Katrina.

Sen.
Susan Collins, a Maine Republican who heads the Senate Governmental
Affairs Committee, and Sen. Joseph Lieberman, the panel’s othertop-ranking Republican, said they hope to shift as much blame as
possible to lower-ranking officials and career federal employees —
ideally at an obscure government agency that few Americans have ever
heard of.

  2. The most noteworthy second-order consequence of this mess thus far has been the return of vertebrates in media. Even CNN has finally decided that just because a cabinet level appointee (whose credibility is on the line) says no one ever thought something like this could happen, doesn’t make it true. See http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/03/katrina.chertoff/index.html. It’ll be interesting to see whether the spines that have been re-evolved are somehow magically lost right when account should be taken of the administration’s talking points and their failure to jibe with reality.
