Hey Florida, Have You Got the Hint Yet?

Apparently, if you take a map of how Florida's counties voted in 2000 (red for Bush, blue for Gore) and overlay a map of the track of the hurricanes that have been beating up Florida this year … you get something amazing. I haven't checked it myself, and I don't actually believe that divine providence directs the weather.

But.

Sadly, Snopes says it ain’t so

Some kind of divine electoral signal wouldn’t necessarily be unwelcome, I think, as long as it was reasonably clear and involved as little smiting as possible.

When Frances was heading for Florida I jokingly told a mate down the pub that this was God’s way of saying “don’t fuck up the vote this time”. Maybe I was right!

  8. tmorgan says:

its a funny idea, but the problem is that those aren’t the hurricanes’ tracks. For instance, Charlie left florida for the atlantic in volusia county (Daytona and New Smyrna), skipped georgia, and hit south carolina. Frances exited florida for the gulf and hit florida a second time. I’ve hit much further west, though the worst of its winds ravaged all along that coast.

Florida does need to stop electing republicans to save itself for many reasons, not the least of which is to get people serious about global warming into office before sea temperatures rise and have a hurricane a week hitting there. This talk of “40 year cycles” is utter tripe – they’ve barely been able to track hurricanes for 40 years (remember, no satellites), so they haven’t had enough data to see a 40 year cycle repeat.

Nice effort, but totally wrong. That isn’t how Charley or Ivan tracked at ALL.

  15. PetervE says:

And, just to make sure we get the message, Ivan is swinging back through the Gulf of Mexico to take a swing at {Rimshot} Texas!

  16. matt says:

Getting OT, but to reply to tmorgan: there’s lots of other data besides satellites.
Buoys, planes, and of course lots of observations over land. There’s little question
that there has been long-term fluctuations in hurricane activity, so a few recent
years of increased activity doesn’t signify much. (And, FWIW, for all reasonable global
warming scenarios any changes *up to this date* are most likely natural, as opposed
    to what may come.)

About 5 years ago Salt Lake City was hit by a tornado, downtown.

That valley had never before had a tornado, although there is a weird event involving seagulls.

My point? This was right around the same time that the “olympic scandal” broke, when some members of the Utah committee were accused of some shonky acts (shrift, graft, and corruption). The tornado tore the corner off the basketball arena.

I had driven through town 2 hours before, and almost stopped in on my way back to MA. Yet another reason to not visit Florida.

  19. Otis says:

ooo busted! snopes sure was on top of this. maybe the first clue was how frances’ track goes very neatly between palm beach and st lucie counties. pretty funny.

Before I ever saw this map, I told my work mates that the reason the storms were hitting Florida was because they screwed up the 2000 election and this was God’s way of saying don’t do it again. I also told my work mates that Ivan was going to hit Texas because Bush lived there. Since Ivan missed on the first go round, it has decided to make another pass. As for Pennsylvania, I hear that you are flip-flopping and voting for Bush.

Well given he has been elected president, Governor, run a business (though not too well) and gotten in schools Ibet you wouldnt be able to clean the floors at…you really shouldnt judge. But thanks for posting the humor sites…I will give you a hint though, when cooking using a microwave shut the door, dont stand so close and dont wrap your food or your head in tinfoil.

“I don’t believe Bush really thought there were any WMD” Thats your opinion and thats fair…but Clinton did, the Russians did, the French did, the CIA did, the British did, the Jordanians did, the Saudis did, the Italians did, Heck even most of Iraqs Generals did, and you know who else did…John F. Kerry.

“I don’t believe Cheney’s denials of industry influence in energy policy” Of course they do, its called lobbying everyone has an influence in policy…the question is was it illegal…show me that it was. So because Cheney used to work for a company that company isnt allowed to seek business? Should we only elect the jobless?
“I don’t believe Rumsfeld when he says things are getting better in Iraq” Have you been to Iraq…I had an army buddy who was there managing a CPA project…it is…but the thing that is preventing it from being even better, faster is the Radical islamics..who are no friends of Liberal ideology, no friend of Kerry, though it seems Kerry would like to be more of a friend to them and wage a more sensitive war against them.

“I don’t believe Ridge when he says the terror alerts are not being used for political purposes” proof? The alerts arent as much for you and the news as they are for emergency and enforcement personel. You see you cant tell Sherrif Joe that the CIA has a mole that said X…you have to give them knowledge to take certain steps without giving them exact information which may foil resources, or the chase. The colors correspond to what type of readiness these organizations have to take and if they have to cancel leave, book overtime etc..stuff you cant have ongoing all the time.

“I don’t believe Tom DeLay when he says the ethics investigation has nothing to do with him” – I havent read much on this.

“I don’t believe Rice when she compares Iraq to post war Germany” How much do you know about Post-war Germany..we lost men for nearly 10 years to SS hold outs, read up on the werewulfs…(SS/Nazi Partisans) there has never been democracy in Iraq…its not an easy prospect this is a region where the party in power brutally represses and kills the other minority groups, each side is accustomed to a certain level of violence and not accustomed to non-forced co-existance.

those who vote for Bush = white trash, lowlifes, rednecks, losers, and the uneducated population of america, you know who you are! Vote for Bush! he’s as dumb as you are! LOL
Bush “I’m a war president, har har har!” – ha ha…yea thats it you must be sooo intelligent…how dare those other people have different opinions on governing america, how dare they vote in a way different than you there must be something wrong with them…thats it…next time we will just ask who you want and give them the job…lol…dude open the windows you arent getting enough oxygen.

Well since this is just another weak easily disproven attack on Bush by liberals who lacking any intelligent, rational, well thought out articulated arguments I will retailiate with a response more akin to most of your intellectual level.

“KERRY IS IN LEAGUE WITH THE DEVIL AND HAS CREATED A WEATHER MACHINE TO DESTROY THE WORLD, HE IS REALLY A MANIACLE EVIL GENIUS (despite his campaign which is being run like a 12 year old is running it)

  48. The way to see these websites clearly? Easy…..toss in a fact. This website (http://new.flhurricane.com)shows the actual paths of the hurricanes. Not as much fun as the one on this site, but hey, facts are like that. Bush isn’t a puppet for oil and armament companies. Kerry didn’t have his spine surgically removed. Clinton didn’t have his detractors murdered.

Critical election this year. Ignore the Swift Boat Veterens and MoveOn.org, and THINK instead.
-If the clock were rewound, and you could put either Kerry or Bush as President the last four years, which would you have preferred?
-Should the US have the right to use it’s own military where it sees fit, or should it come under UN control?
-“Affordable health insurance”……means what? If it’s insurance, and we’re spreading risk across those who sign up, then making it “affordable” means….lowering payments and making up the difference through taxes? Or what?
-Should the US be a “leader” in the world, regardless of what the world thinks? Or should the US mute it’s leadership and work tightly with other countries?

Answer these questions, and similar ones, then decide who to vote for. May be Bush. May be Kerry. But make the decision on facts, using intelligence, and factoring in where you’d like to see the US go.

The rest……like this website….is worse than garbage.

First part of Brown v. McGruder (just getting started):

AB: During the conventions we used this space to explore a different point of view, a contrarian point of view if you will,it’s safe to say there’s frequently no more contrarian than that of a cartoonist. We’re joined by Aaron McGruder, his cartoon is “The Boondocks,” and is syndicated most days in 300 newspapers, but sometimes a few less, depending on the material. It’s good to see you.

AM: It’s good to see you.

AB: All right, two sentences, who won the debate?

AM: Kerry. He got his ass whupped.

    AB: Who did?

AM: Kerry. I’m sorry, no I’m sorry, I mean Bush.

AB: I set up that whole line up, and then you blew it.

AM: I did. Um, it was a, uh, it was a very clear victory. You know, what bothers me about, um, shows like this and all the news shows, after Bush talks, I see all these smart people completely ignoring the elephant in the room. The elephant in the room, which nobody wants to say, is that Bush is not a smart man. He cannot articulate well. He cannot speak in complete sentences.

    AB: Well, but–

AM: And everyone just ignores it. Like that’s okay.

    AB: So–

    AM: He’s REALLY dumb.

AB: Okay. I, that’s a different thing. Let’s say he is not articulate. And I think they would concede he is not the most articulate guy on the planet, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have convictions, it doesn’t mean he believes in something,it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s wrong, it just means he can’t express himself.

AM: But beliefs don’t mean anything it you’re stupid. And not only that but he, it’s almost as if he’s talking to the dumbest segment of society, whereas Kerry–

AB: Aaron, don’t you think that’s an incredibly arrogant way to look at the world?

AM: It’s, it’s real, you know, it’s just that nobody is saying the obvious, which is the man is not smart, and he is the president. And everybody knows it but nobody is saying it.

AB: What does that say then about the 52 or 3 or 1 or 49 and a half tonight percent of the country that not only believe that he is smart enough to run the country now but that he should be the guy to for the next four years?

AM: Uh, I think they have been woefully misled. I think Americans have a natural inclination like all people around the world to believe that their government is not corrupt, that people are fair and smart and aren’t lying to them. And history doesn’t prove that out, and, uh, current events doesn’t prove that out. The American people have been lied to, and it’s at the point now where I think that percentage of people, uh, simply are not interested in the truth. They don’t want to go down the road [? with the thought ?] where 1. the President is not intelligent and 2. the people behind the President who are intelligent, uh, are deliberately lying and misleading the American people. Constantly.

AB: Let me see how cynical you are.

    AM: Okay.

AB: Do you believe that a Kerry presidency would be more honest, or is this a corruption in your view of the entire establishment?

AM: I , I, I don’t blame it, I think to say it’s the establishment is oversimplified, I think that the institution of journalism has failed in its responsibility to hold the government accountable. The government is doing what it’s supposed to do when left unchecked. I do think Kerry would be better than Bush. I think he would be more honest. I think he would be more intelligent. But that, everybody knows that already. That’s not really in anyone’s debate. It’s just, people have picked a side. It’s, you know, it’s like, you know, it’s the kind of weird God people in the middle of America that people that live on the coast fly over and we don’t talk to those people, we don’t understand those people, and they don’t understand us. Uh, but, nobody just says the obvious that the President can’t articulate himself and is dumb and drives me nuts.

AB: I got all that. Nice to meet you.\

AM: It is a pleasure. Thanks for having me on.

AB: Come back and see us.

AM: Hey, if you let me. (la

Ok lets analyze your points… the Taliban is resurgent…define that, where are you getting your information because they are fighting us, and the northern alliance…we have killed 10’s of thousands of them, we own the air, we did what the Soviets couldnt do, and they are NOT resurgent…gone of course not they will always be there as the basques are in Spain/france and as the radical IRA are in ireland…but they are powerless to influence or impact our efforts there.

    ——————————————————-

Catastrophic? How dramatic? How is defeating a huge army, a dictator with less than 300 casualties? We have rebuilt much of Iraq, but the nations who dont want democracy freedom, or a secular government are aiding saddam loyalists, radical fundelmentalists to hinder the development of elections, democracy, and the economic progress…those nations since It doesnt seem you know much about middle east politics or security are Syria and Iran…as for a plan…thats the comment that proves to me you know very little about “peace and security issues” you see a plan is fine but its dependent on expectations of what the other guy is going to do…which in a state of war or insurgency is very fluid and not easily judged. You claim that Kerry has the answers, but almost all of Kerry’s answers are either exactly what Bush is doing…or complete jokes “we are going to kill the insurgents and terrorists” —wow, enlightening…I give it a “no shit sherlock” Kerry doesnt have the backbone to make the tough decisions that will result in angry polls and possibly dead soldiers, but in the end will result in a safer better world for us, the Iraqis, the democracies and moderate governments in the region and the world as a whole.

    —————————————————————————————-

Ha if you are so smart then why do you resort to a emotional ranting tirade rather than logical thought out debate…I call BS on your brains.

But since we are having an internet penis contest, I will play along. Wow you are an engineer, so this engineering degree you have grants you divine intelligence into politics, economics, security policy? Must be some magical degree did you get them off the internet? Education isnt a sole indicator of intelligence, I would think an engineer would know that given einstein, edison were not the most well “educated” people…but again I will play along with your dream trip.

Me…well I also have two degrees…but not in engineering which plays no point to this issue…they are in International Studies, with a focus in U.S. security policy, and a dual regional focus in Western Europe and Central Eurasia… my second degree is in Economics, with a focus in Internation trade and monetary policy. It is from a private school, located in D.C. where I have worked and interned in government jobs. My family has a strong military background. My roomate works on the hill and I have a buddy who managed a 20million CPA project in Bagdad, when he was given a leave from his stint as a special forces soldier in Afghanistan, (where he is back now serving another year).

So I say this will all truth, I know more about this and politics than you do…you see because I am here, I dont read crap off the internet and form my opinions on it, or get it from some wanna be newspaper reporter. I talk to and know people who are involved in this stuff first hand. So if you are going to fight a battle of wits with me about this stuff you better go back to your parents basement and get some intelligence because I dont fight unarmed men.

As for Bush not being able to speak…I will give you that…but I would rather have someone being a president than a professional speaker or actor…you see what bothers me about Kerry isnt how he says what he says its what he says. This further proves to me you are a moron…because you use how bush speaks as an argument….lol…thats hilarious…

I did see the debate…Bush didnt do so well…but Kerry has NOTHING…he is just cant seem to decide if doing the right thing and taking saddam out is/was a good idea. Sure he can say so now, it was because there is no risk, its not like he is going to be put back into power…so its a safe position to snipe at Bush from, but when it came down to the wire he covered his ass with (well I am for it BUT….) so either way he would have something to attack Bush with…thats not decisive and its not presidential in terms of leadership. Hell Kerry isnt even doing his job as a senator, he is stealing from the people of massachussetts…

He makes about 158,000$ a year as a senator…but he has shown up for something like 8-10% of the votes this past year…and has averaged missing about 50-70% of the votes for the past 3 years. If anyone (me, you whoever) missed that much work you would be fired…but he rather surfs and skis and such rather than doing his job. He bashed Bush for acting on intelligence that the Russians, the french, the Brits, the CIA, the Jordanians, the Saudies, the Italians all agreeed on, that the U.N. agreed on. But you know what…if he had atteneded those 38 out of 49 Senate Foreign Intelligence committees he missed maybe he would have said something, or done something instead he was yachting with his “foreign leader fans” (un-named of course) Oh and he didnt even bother to read the Iraq memo on why Bush was headed into iraq BEFORE he voted to give him authorization…thats borderline treason..he didnt even have the time to read a reasoning for war before giving authorization…wtf.

So maybe you should put Dr. Phil up there for president, I mean he is a good speaker and it seems thats a primary characteristic you look for in a president, which is brilliant mind you..you would probably think einstein was a fool with his stuttering problem.

OMG…I just read your last post…you are using a CARTOONIST as a political pundit and judge of intelligence…ok…now you are making me laugh…what are you an engineer of? Lego towns? perhaps stuffed bunnies…because if thats what you are going to throw out I am going to call you a miniscule intellect not worthy of the time it takes to read you moronic comments…

So Bush is dumb…well did you go to yale he did, did you fly jets? thats not for the moronic…he got an MBA…ran a business as well…I dont believe he is a genius but I think its safe to say he is smarter and more accomplished than you. Especially if you equate speaking ability with intelligence…but thats already been discussed. Look at your hero Bill Clinton, smart guy, read a lot, Rhodes scholar and all that, and he tarnished his reputation and his agenda and cost democratic colleagues senate and house seats because he couldnt be smart enough NOT to get a BJ from fatty mcIntern. He got us into Somalia, he saw the Al-queda threat as a “law enforcement” issue to be dealt with my police and foreign internal security but less so by the U.S. military..under his watch Al-Queda struck the WTC in 93, the Kobe Towers, the African embassies, the Cole, and numerous others before he realized..he these al-queda guys are bad little cockroaches…maybe we should destroy their nest…and it was while he was getting hummers from lipservice lewinsky that they plotted 9-11.

So thank you Bush’s Bush, you have re-affirmed a few facts and taught me a few new ones.

1.) Bush is still the right guy for right now
2.) You Liberals have few arguments of substance
3.) you rant on emotional tirades without rational thought.
4.) you value pointless things that have no relevance.
5.) you revere fictional movie makers, cartoonists and media “observers” rather than those in the trenches (metaphorically)
6.) and you are an idiot.

    Thanks… 🙂

    Quote from duh…..george:
Well I hope all your little “Righties” that are in your twenties like hot weather with bullets swarming over your head? Cause unless your a spoiled little rich kid like your “Hero” your going to be heading for a nice warm vacation in Iraq pretty soon when the draft takes affect.

    ————————————————————————————–
Lol, hey genius why dont you pull the joint out of your ears and go look up who has SPONSORED that bill….nevermind, it might take to long for you to get a clue…its the democrats…yes the bill was sponsored by two democrats as 1.) a fear tactic 2.) a lame attempt at influencing the current election 3.) they are morons

And if my country calls I would be honored to serve…my brothers served, my father served and its the least you can do for a nation that give you freedom, democracy, hope and prosperity. ANything else would be cowardly (which I am guessing is an adjective that applies to you) To be honest it would be insulting to be drafted…if the nation needs troops that bad (which they dont at present) people should elect to join and I would probably do so. But thats irrelevent to this. My hope would be to be posted on the canadian border with orders to shoot cowardly little homo’s like yourself that try and run…because you are being asked to pay back a little for the freedom you have been granted to be well …lame.

Of course thats the life of the military… if Kerry gets elected he will just be everyones most popular friend, giving in to every demand and every request by the likes the Iran’s Mullah’s and Kim il Jong, until some nutjob blows a Nuke on mainstreet U.S.A. THen maybe you will get it, of course it will only take the deaths of 10s of thousands of American civilians to do it. Or maybe it will be an economic shift taking the U.S. out of the top.

That said, there wont be a draft (though I think maybe there should be) it will help identify who are the men and women and true Americans, who are the cowards, and toughen the nation up so its not so full of weeny liberals who have no concept of what freedom is, and that fighting to give it to others is a noble venture.

  55. Duh....George says:

Yes, “Liberation from the Liberal Agenda”
I am aware of who sponsored the bill in question. But the point is we wouldn’t even need to be thinking about if your “C” student president hadn’t got us in this mess to begin with. Someone is going to have to clean up this horrific mess. But I would expect that type of reply from you “like minded, unable to think for yourself”…”Cattle.” You have to have some idiotic color code to tell you when to be afraid….oh my god be sure and stock up on duck tape!!! Your of the type that only know how to call people names and think just cause someone has a mind of their on to think with that they are unpatriotic. Least Kerry had the balls to go fight in a war instead of having his rich daddy get him to remain stateside? And OH MY GOD….Kerry actually had the ability to decide for HIMSELF that the war in Vietnam was also a “Wrong War,” just like the one in Iraq. So sister…..take your name calling, simple minded self to your little duct taped up room protecting you from the big bad terrorist and shut up.
