  1. Maybe it would be okay if we just called it an “archipelago”, and skipped that controversial “gulag” part.

    Little islands popping up here and there filled with non-existent prisoners. Of course, since they don’t exist, they have no rights.

    As Volokh says, there are degrees of evil and its important to distinguish between them. How else would you know that torture of a few dozen people isn’t worth even a blog post, torture of a hundred or so qualifies for a post but requires that the problem be declared inconsequential, torture of hundreds or thousands qualifies for a post stating that it should be investigated (but not by the Justice Department!) but its still not that bad by comparison with the worst atrocities in human history, etc. I wonder what the exact number is that would prompt him to regret giving thousands of dollars to elect the man responsible?
