This Should Be Obvious

These guys are right and these guys are wrong. Read about it at TPM since the ADL site is slashdotted.

Try to recall that “The mission of the Anti-Defamation League is to stop the defamation of the Jewish people, to secure justice and fair treatment to all citizens alike.”

Except sometimes, apparently.

Denouncing A does not create a duty to denounce B. Whether A deserves denunciation is an issue of its own. As is the status of B.

I am for freedom of religion in every nook and cranny of the USA. Period.

By and large I’m also for it worldwide, although I’m not prepared to say that local traditions and exigencies in places I am less familiar with might not create mild exceptions some times. Although I don’t approve of state religion, as in the UK for example where there is an established church, I’m not prepared to say it’s immoral.

I am on vacation, and having far too relaxing a time to click those links. But I’m guessing just from the name of the final link that it’s to a story that was totally discredited by someone who did, you know, actual research.

  2. I believe in freedom of speech and expression, but not in building a strip club next to a church or mosque. I sense you don’t grasp that bit of common sense, and neither do the planners of the mosque at Ground Zero.

I’m not grasping. Which are you equating with a strip club – Ground Zero or the Islamic Center?

I also believe in being accurate. It’s inaccurate to say that this mosque is planned, “at ground zero”. It would be just as accurate to say it’s planned “at city hall”, as it’s about the same distance to both. Now, I tend to think that even if the mosque were literally right across the street from the former world trade center site, so long as it otherwise applied with all the laws, there would be no problem. But it’s not the case that the proposed site is “at ground zero”, and saying that it is is, at best, showing an unfortunate carelessness with facts, and perhaps a willingness to mislead. Please, do better.

What’s wrong with building a strip club next to a church? Seriously. No joke. I’m sure that neither wants to be next to the other, but I see no legal reason why one MUST not be next to the other.

Ideally, people’s taste and personal sense of right and wrong have little to do with our legal rights. If this were not the case we would be living in a tyranny of the majority. This is why the anti-defamation league is wrong (even if I find their release highly persuasive).
