“Col. David Hogg, commander of the 2nd Brigade of the 4th
Infantry Division, said tougher methods are being used to
gather the intelligence. On Wednesday night, he said, his
troops picked up the wife and daughter of an Iraqi lieutenant
general. They left a note: “If you want your family released,
turn yourself in.” Such tactics are justified, he said, because,
“It’s an intelligence operation with detainees, and these
people have info.” They would have been released in due
course, he added later.
The tactic worked. On Friday, Hogg said, the lieutenant
general appeared at the front gate of the U.S. base and
surrendered.”

Alas, it’s not new. See also The Horror. But we have to keep screaming about it while it happens (and punish the guilty when it stops).
Michael, re the New Standard News: They’re about a year old, and more open about their sources, methods, and biases than any news organization I can think of. Have a look! NSN’s left-ness will cause some people simply to refuse to credit or cite them, but I’m willing to bet many more of their stories stand up over time than those of some other “news” organizations you can think of.
Compare and contrast with Murray Waas’ blog, prominently linked to by Josh Marshall recently. True, there’s actual reporting going on (on Plame stonewalling by DOJ), but Gonzales’ name is spelled wrong in every occurrence, there’s no email or feedback box for readers to respond in any way, and there’s a distinct air of anxiety throughout that Waas retain his superior position (reporter with capital R) to the ‘umble reader. Color me put off.
