I Apologize in Advance For TSA Making You Miss Your Flight

Boing Boing reports that TSA is now requiring that you remove all electronic devices from your carry-on bags, including cables etc. and place them in a separate bin to be scanned at the security checkpoints. I could hold the line up ten minutes myself given all the gear I travel with…

No word at present about this new assault on air travel at TSA’s new oh-so-friendly PR blog (“Liquids cover 70% of the earth and they also make up a good percentage of our comments from the traveling public.”).

Don’t let the smiling faces fool you: the more we engage in security theater and ‘protect’ against minimal threats to look good while diverting resources from things that matter, the more that any hypothetical enemies are laughing.

What did I miss? I had to remove my camera and my laptop computer from their bags last summer when I flew out of National in DC (I refuse to use the other name). However, they used the wand without argument when I told them that I had two hip implants.

I couldn't agree more. I always say that the only reason I have never hijacked a plane is because I DONT WANT TO!

Whether you allow cables, liquid, or even bowie knives on planes, it won't make it less likely to be hijacked. A resourceful and smart person can make or disguise any instrumentality of a hijack in some creative ways.

Security theater is more about letting everyone know that we are the government's bitch. You already hear it with the debate over entering stadiums. They are really looking for profit-sapping flasks, but claim they are looking for anthrax. The public's reaction? So what, they do it at airports.

Soon it will be malls, movie theaters, everywhere...
