Is Slashdot Losing Its Edge?

In Slashdot | Intuit Disables Features in Quicken To Force Upgrades, Slashdot discovers a very annoying Quicken problem…that I wrote about in May, 2004 (see Annals of Software Obsolescence: Intuit is Evil (Quicken Dept.)).

It’s an odd feeling to be that much ahead of the Slashdot crowd. This sort of feeds a growing suspicion I’ve been having that Slashdot isn’t as cutting edge as it used to be.

Slashdot   Slashdot It!

First off, if you're tempting the wrath of millions of geeks, that had better at least be Slashdot.

Second, the quality control system at Slashdot leaves something to be desired. Repeat approvals of previously submitted stories are quite common. What Slashdot does have is millions of geeks submitting stories--its like the millions of monkeys that generate lots of dross, but the occaisonal Shakespeare as well.

#4729. As I understand it /. was founded on the basis that at any given moment, including the first, it is not as cutting edge as it used to be. However I think it's now lot better than it was just after they made it big, in the days when Jon Katz(?) would write endless fact-free screeds about hacker culture and the inevitable triumph of the geek.

Actually, I liked the 'Hellmouth' stuff...

The first "Voices from the Hellmouth", not so bad (and I think a pretty big deal).
More generally: you just made me go back and read some of his other stuff. Ack ack ack.
