Edward Tufte is a big hero of mine! The best two graphics (pre-PPT, thank goodness) ever made are in his “Visual Display of Quantitative Information”. One is the 19th century French railway timetable; and the other is the graphical representation of Napoleon’s invasion of Moscow. Pure beauty both of them.
