Phone Frenzies

We were driving in downtown Coral Gables last night a bit before seven pm, when we saw something very unusual: a long line of people queuing on the sidewalk. Understand that people just don't stand around much outdoors in South Florida in late June. It's too hot. And yet, here was a line halfway down the block, curving around to something we could not see. A book signing? Supermodels? Miami Dolphins? No. After we turned the corner, all was revealed: The AT&T/Cingular store. I'm guessing a horde of folks came by after work to buy an iPhone and were still there an hour or two later. (The looked too fresh to have been there all day.) When I came back around 8:30 pm there were still over a dozen people in the queue. Amazing.

More to my taste is this feature from AnandTech, Apple's iPhone Dissected: We did it, so you don't have to. Not that there's anything terribly surprising in there…

What a pity that AT&T is now having glitches with the activation of iPhones. With hundreds of thousands of frustrated customers, it looks like the iPhone may die a quick death.

I think it would take something more serious than activation problems to kill the thing. After all, the first month or so of implementation of local number portability was a disaster and now it’s taken pretty much for granted. Quite a few people at work queued up to buy the things early (I mean, really – you can buy them online from AT&T) and are in rainbows-and-kittens love with it.

I live in a small university town in central NY, and when I drove by the AT&T store Friday afternoon there were three or four 20-somethings lined up behind a rope. That’s a pretty big event around here. (I’m sticking with my Blackberry for the time being, myself.)

That post taking the phone apart is one of the biggest tech geek posting I’ve ever seen. But its mightly cool and I’d never think of doing that to something the first day I had it.
