A Scholarship for Bloggers?

A $5,000/year scholarship for bloggers? Apparently so: Announcing The Blogging Scholarship from the Daniel Kovach Foundation.

It seems grad students can apply — so why not law students too? They want a 3.0 GPA, a lively blog, and an application by Oct. 30, which is just a few days away.

I confess to being a little puzzled as to why blogging seems worth so much more than other things, but there you have it.

They will pick ten finalists and then, uh-oh, have a “public vote” to choose the single winner. I wonder how they plan to prevent ballot-stuffing.

The reason the blogging one is worth so much more is not that we think the other fields are worth less…it is just a combination of the following three reasons

    – before I started a blog I was nearly bankrupt, and now I probably make more than most executives do…I have even made amazing friends, and went from suicidally depressed to happy…almost all of that I can attribute to blogging and the people who became friends of mine after meeting me by reading my blog
    – I believe that many power structures and power sources are quite corrupt in nature, and love the idea of supporting bottoms up publishing, which if done well allows authors to be more closely aligned with their passions than most job opportunities do
    – since this field and scholarship are different, new, and so close to me, I wanted to ensure I did whatever possible to make the scholarship memorable

Is there any certainty that this blogging scholarship isn’t just a SEO scam?
For example, maybe Mr. Kovach is just trying to get his scholarship information at the top of Google and so has claimed to create these scholarships, but is just using people to create buzz around his site. Or maybe I’m just cynical.

  3. Hey guys, the 10 finalists have been chosen, so go vote for them if you can! (Especially me, Shelley!)
🙂 It might be a popularity contest, but I could really use the money for my PhD thesis. My blog is here: http://www.scienceblogs.com/retrospectacle
