The Modern “Let Them Eat Cake” Moment

When I saw this quote on Atrios’s site, I thought it was a parody.

But Editor and Publisher, to whom he cites, is reporting it as straight news:

Barbara Bush: Things Working Out “Very Well” for Poor Evacuees from New Orleans NEW YORK Accompanying her husband, former President George H.W.Bush, on a tour of hurricane relief centers in Houston, Barbara Bush said today, referring to the poor who had lost everything back home and evacuated, “This is working very well for them.”

The former First Lady’s remarks were aired this evening on National Public Radio’s “Marketplace” program.

Then she added: “What I’m hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

“And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this–this [she chuckles slightly]is working very well for them.”

And here’s a link to the audio of the NPR Marketplace segment containing this incredible quote. It’s real. Although some people might I suppose call it a nervous giggle rather than a chuckle.

PS. E&P actually ameliorated the quote from la Bush. What she said on the tape about New Orleans’ newly destitute is: “What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is that they want to stay” in Texas.

Oh yeah, losing everything you own, your job, and possibly friends and members of your family, not to mention being exposed to diseases and having to suffer through up to five days of hell while waiting to be evacuated is nothing compared to the chance to start all over again and be dependent on charity and the good graces of FEMA in Houston!

Why be surprised, this is the mother of a man who stood minutes on end when our nation was attacked, frozen and clueless in a class room and only showed up as the head of Federal Govmt after 6 days in the worst disaster of the century…

Well, sure — but you’ve forgotten that some of the mothers got a free stroller — a real $35 STROLLER! and some free clothes, and shoes even.
And now they’re living on camp cots cheek by jowl with total strangers — we all remember those wonderful days at Camps Whatchcallit and what fun it was to camp out!
And they don’t have to WORK at all. They just get to sit around all day, not on chairs but on the floor or else on their cots — except when they walk two blocks to go to the bathroom or get a meal. Of course, they haven’t got a dime, so they can’t even go out for a beer or a cup of coffee – but hey isn’t life grand. Things sure are working out for them jest fine!

Sociologists say anyone, brought up in a wrong environment, is capable of becoming a criminal. I think it’s also true that any of us – no matter how humanitarian we may be – if brought up in a privileged, spoiled environment, could be like the Bush family. How would you like to be a Bush? Would you really want to be brought up in a Bush type family? When I see what these people do and say I feel privileged to have been brought up in a normal middle class family.

GWB had everything handed to him, including the presidency, but it’s a double edged sword. He’s a the ultimate victim of the Peter Principle – rising to his level of incompetency. But because of his “ultimate fortunate son” status, he has risen to be perhaps the worst U.S. president ever.

Then again, is it environment or heredity? Are the Bush’s pricks because they are born rich, or are they rich because they are pricks?

I bet that if there were not so many minorities and poor people in these areas they would have been evacuated right after the hurricane, if not before.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO US? September 4, 2005

Our country is being laid bare before an astonished and titillated jury – people all around the world. There are no secrets left. We elected this administration when we should have known better. Bush’s shame is our own and people around the world know it.

In the months and years to come, we will all learn the details of the horrendous governmental failures in New Orleans and the rest of the battered coast. Today, already, we know the worst: President Bush could have picked up the phone and ordered help for those suffering people we all have been watching on our TVs, day and night for DAYS. He could have done something. If such an idea was beyond Mr. Bush’s reach, any of a dozen top aides could have given him a little nudge. “Uh, sorry to interrupt your holiday, Mr. President, but I think it might be a good idea to, uh, hmm, do something?” Instead, the president and his closest, best and brightest advisers chose to believe their own spin, not their lyin’ eyes. “Help is on the way!” they said. There was no outrage, no phone calls, and no commands.

When he finally did emerge from his cocoon (on day 5, after a few jolly fundraisers and a bike ride or two), took a look-see around the shattered land and even shared a few hands-on comforting moments with actual victims, he seemed to wake from his slumber. He convened a meeting and made calls and gave orders and, to all appearances, really seemed to do something.

More repulsive than the president’s personal failure to act when it would have really made a difference; more craven than his policy and budget decisions that effectively cancelled on-going repairs of the failing levees; the worst thing about the president (and his people) is that they really don’t care that much about the horrendous suffering we have all seen. The president and his advisers are not as competent, obviously, as they think they are, but even they are capable of better than this. Maybe if those folks living like animals on the streets were white…and rich … the administration could have understood and done something a lot sooner.

Today I learned that FEMA turned away truckloads of Red Cross supplies that were headed into the city on that first Tuesday. Their reasoning? FEMA believed that, by making things too comfortable for the victims of this disaster, they might stick around and not evacuate as ordered. Too comfortable to evacuate? Were they serious?

The only way to understand the criminal neglect of the suffering people in New Orleans is to see the government’s response through the prism of racism and utter disdain for the plight of the poor in this country. Dissing the poor and ignoring their despair is woven into every policy and institution of this administration. I am enraged.

What about that world jury? They see the U.S.A. as a scary war machine, willing and able to send its military anywhere on earth to promote its perceived interests, but unwilling and apparently unable to help its own people in a disaster. They see George “Bring ‘em on!” Bush as a ridiculous, arrogant cowboy who would have provided eight years of comedy if he had not proven to be so dangerous. If it were not for the innocent victims of Katrina, they would see this catastrophe as more or less our karmic reward for the death and destruction we have caused elsewhere.

What has become of our country? What has become of the respect and affection we used to enjoy throughout the world? What has become of our basic notion of government? What, in God’s name, has happened to us?

Tom Moody elaborates (and gives Babs too much credit for wanting hit her son Chimpy on the head. She hasn’t hit him on the head since has gotten nearly 2,000 American military personnel killed and I really really doubt she will worry to much about how many bodies of the poor they will pull out of NOLA or from the debris fields that used to the coasts of Mississippi and Alabama. She is clearly more worried about her serial killer son than any damage he may do to American lives in Iraq in this case, and her quote about how well it’s all working out for the survivors is along the same sociopathic lines — unfeeling, self-centered, nothing matters outside her personal sphere):

“[UPDATE – this post has been completely rewritten since its original appearance.]
In his May 21, 2004 column, the New York Times’ Frank Rich mentions the “Let Them Eat Cake” quote of our time–Barbara Bush’s statement in a “Good Morning America” interview given a few days before the commencement of Iraq War (March 18, 2003). She and the first President Bush discussed the invasion from the armchair perspective of two old folks sittin’ around the house:
DIANE SAWYER, ABC NEWS: (OC) You said that, that Mrs. Bush at one point had said to the two of you, don’t watch too much TV. You may be watching too much TV.
FORMER FIRST LADY BARBARA BUSH, UNITED STATES: No question.

DIANE SAWYER, ABC NEWS: (OC) You do watch?

FORMER FIRST LADY BARBARA BUSH, UNITED STATES: I watch none. He sits and listens and I read books, because I know perfectly well that, don’t take offense, that 90 percent of what I hear on television is supposition, when we’re talking about the news. And he’s not, not as understanding of my pettiness about that. But why should we hear about body bags, and deaths, and how many, what day it’s gonna happen, and how many this or what do you suppose? Or, I mean, it’s, it’s not relevant. So, why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that. And watch him suffer.”

“….The “him” she’s apparently talking about in that last sentence is Bush Junior, who doesnt seem to be suffering much in a clip from Michael Moore’s new film Fahrenheit 9/11, as Rich noted–it’s the much linked-to video where he clowns around as he is being made up for his televised announcement of the Iraq invasion. When I first read the Barbara Bush quote months ago, I didn’t realize she was talking about her son, though. She uses “he” a couple of times, referring to her husband, and it seemed weird for her to be talking about “watching him suffer” with Bush the Elder sitting right next to her. (Maybe if I wasted my own beautiful mind watching more TV, I wouldn’t have to parse these nuances from internet transcripts.) At any rate, my initial reaction to Rich’s column was that he’d read it wrong, which I unfortunately blurted out in the first published version of this post. But I guess she is fussing over her poor suffering son, so lonely at the top. Privately she probably wants to knock him upside the head for embarrassing the family.”

I used to live in Texas and they are indeed a very hospitable folk, particularly in Houston. Mrs. Bush should acknowledge that the federal response to the disaster in New Orleans was, at the very least, a breach of ettiquette, especially with a Texan in the White House. The people at the Superdome and the Convention Center should not necessarily have expected to be invited for lunch but, at the very least, they should have been offered a cold drink, a tall ice tea or perhaps a refreshing cold lemonade.

Even the victims of this hurricane still have it better than the Tsunami Victims. Everyone needs to get off of thier high horses and get a DAMN LIFE!!

  65. Carol says:

I see what’s happening they, the Bush’s and co., only have respect for rich people. She has no respect for the American people because we were stupid enough to elect her son twice. If you don’t respect someone you have no problem insulting them to their face, and expect to be thanked for it. Especially, if you think they’re gullible and stupid.

  66. fiercy says:

Sergeant Adam, please tell me you’re not an American. You see, the issue here is not whether the hurricane victims/survivors have it better than the Tsunami victims, the issue is that people–human beings–are suffering and not getting help in the manner in which it should be given. If we don’t point fingers now, how are we going to make it better (God forbid) the next time around? Sure, if that’s ALL we do, it’s pointless, but when we start pointing, a lot of us start thinking. A lot of us even begin noticing those fingers that point back at US when we point a single finger at someone else. And perhaps-next time we step into a voting booth, we’ll remember this and double check our chads.

Idiots? Because we’re outraged? Nah. Idiots are defined by Webster’s as stupid and foolish. Stupid is defined as “slow to learn or understand; obtuse: tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes: marked by a lack of intelligence or care”. I’m thinking the Bush administration and your comments both fit the bill very well right now.

  67. ladylove says:

I just heard the taped comment of Mrs. B today. It didn’t really suprise me that she said that. When your an “elite” you figure that if us po’ people get food and water we should be content. I’m sure the people are grateful and problay were underprivledged in New Orleans. But I’m possitive they wish the could wake up from this nightmare and be at home. At home in their own beds (not cots,) without 24/7 lighting and thousands of other people surronding them. For her to chuckle at these people being grateful for being in a mass shelter is heart breaking. Compared to the bush’s we are all underprivledged and I would assume they would rather die then to be in the evacues (not refugees) situation. She also had the nerve to say “this is like America to them” in terms of being in Houston. Is this lady skipping medication doses, New Orleans is in America. I guess since they were being called refugees she figured they came from third world countries. I can see her confusion since the coverage on the aftermath looked like a third world country.
I regards to mr tony, you cant be serious. Don’t belive the hype. What happened to the convicts that were incarsurated before katrina? Do you think they were tucked away from the general public? I only saw one picture of convicts being pepper sprayed on a bridge. I highly doubt that was all of them. Not to say their weren’t ignorant people down there doing evil-evil things. Like raping little girls, as young as 3, and killing them. But those people don’t represent the masses. Your comment shows your ignorance and your cold heartedness. Lord willing you’ll mature one day and have intelligent things to say.
This whole ordeal is a big confussion and we’ll never fully know the truth, only God knows. I just pray that we never forget what happened on U.S soil while the president was twiddeling his thumbs. This shows the entire world how our “leader” treats our less fortunate in a time of disaster. But is always so quick to jump up and help other countries. Maybe if he wasn’t spending all this money on a war he could have built bigger better levys. This cold hearted “president” needs to go. Four more years and he’s out. Did I thank those who voted for him, Thanks a ton!
Last but not least american people don’t stop thinking, pointing fingers and asking questions. This should be unacceptable. And please don’t vote for JEB BUSH if he runs for president, or anyone else with the name bush. Much love and help those that can’t help themselves.

  68. SK8 says:

This reminds me of the British government’s reaction to the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s. The Irish were nothing but poor idiots anyway, or government officials reasoned, and so they’d either benefit by dying or they’d make out better with fewer other Irish degenerates to compete with in the aftermath of the tragedy. Of course, the British government’s commitment to laissez faire in that period might be worth comparing to the Bush’s hands-off policy in the case of the hurricane.

  69. Kidd says:

My prayers go out to the victims of hurricane Katrina but also to troops overseas. Why? They are off fighting to make things supposedly better for other countries when their own backyard is in an un-humane state. I don’t consider the people in the stadium to be the animals. No,that would suggest that I was born and destined to die a moron. The real animals are the ones who have no sense of urgency for their own so called “Americans” and then the nerve to come out of their silver spoon mouths to critique the victims and imply that they are better off now then they have ever been. I don’t even think that they deserve to be labeled with the word animal. Even animals display sorrow when one of their own dies. These people are truly monsters. Everyday that goes by is a constant reminder for those that voted for the arrogant, pointy ear’d S.O.B., that their vote affects someone, somewhere. But again,my prayers go out to the victims and also the troops overseas. I pray that God will deliver them from the current state of the union and the genious calling the shots. In the meantime please do whatever you can to assist those in need. God Bless

  70. DreaEsquire says:

I am truly saddened and dismayed at the level of insensitivity displayed by those that lead this country. I remember thinking on day two that ‘surely help will be arriving today; surely there is a plan and provisions, perhaps it just taking a day to mobilize.’ It wasnt the thinking of a woman wearing rose-tinted glasses. It was the hopeful optimism of a black woman who did not want to be so quick to jump to judgment; we as black people are so often criticized for making everything a racial issue. On day two, a friend told me via telephone that the delay was because there were mostly black people waiting for help. I didnt want to be that person; the Bible urges us to be swift to listen and slow to speak. But when the help never arrived and day after day people continued to suffer, to dehydrate, to die, to be forced into criminal activity so that children will have diapers and the elderly will have a sip of water and perhaps a crust of bread, it became undeniable. What hurts me so is that in this new millennium, in 2005, we as a country cannot move beyond color and culture to see humanity.
It pains me as I tearfully type this message that I am a lesser person in this country only because I am black. For that reason it is assumed that I am accustomed to not having food and other resources, it is assumed that I am a criminal, that I am accustomed to living in a war zone, that I and my people wade in waist-deep filth everyday, that I simply live like an animal. People in this country wouldnt look at me and see me for what I am: a thirty-something, single, childless woman, an attorney, educated and articulate, with no criminal record, who has never done drugs or prostituted her body, who since age 16 has always had a job and therefore paid taxes in this country – I TOO SING AMERICA!!!!
I am horrified at the actions of the Bush Administration – I TOO SING AMERICA! I am mortified at the comments of the Bush Matriarch – I TOO SING AMERICA! I am sickened at the comments of some posted on this site which undoubtedly reflect the musings of other everday people in this country -I TOO SING AMERICA! There were decent, hardworking, tax-paying people left to fend for themselves in a submerged and devastated New Orleans, Lousiana, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Black or White, THEY TOO SING AMERICA!
As I conclude, let me leave you with some food for thought: Though I agree that Michael Brown, Director of FEMA, should have lost his job, he was just a sacrificial lamb led to the slaughter being the low man on the totem pole. Chertoff should be next, he is the Secretary of HOMELAND Security; there was no homeland or security for those left in New Orleans. Secretary Chertoff is Director Brown’s boss. After that should be George W. Bush himself. He is the supervisor of both Secretary Chertoff and Director Brown. He is also the Commander in Chief of the American Armed Forces. He was asleep at his post when this disaster struck. If you or I failed to do our job and our failure caused the suffering and death that Bush’s failure to act caused, we’d lose our livelihood. He should be held to the same standard. He should be hauled before Congress and impeached. It was done to William Clinton when he got a blow job by somebody other than his wife and that simply was not a matter of national security or concern. The Bush Administration’s failure to act to protect AMERICAN CITIZENS on AMERICAN SOIL caused needless suffering and death and is a valid matter of national security and concern.

Once I had occasion to see an exhibit of the childhood toys of the last Russian Tsar. Among them were thousands of hand painted wooden and lead soldiers, guns and military paraphernalia which he spent hours setting up against each other in his land of fantasy.
I cannot but see a similarity in our president, with his bravado and audacity to proclaim “Mission Accomplished” and”Bring e’m on” regarding a conflict which he so eagerly promoted to satisfy his own apparent childish ego.
President Bush has never faced an enemy in war and has no feelings or understanding about it other than looking upon our men and women as toys – toy soldiers to be expended from his vast collection of military equipment.
Is this the kind of person we want to represent our wonderful nation?
“The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment of men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding.” – Louis Brandeis, Supreme Court Justice. 1928
I feel so sad for those unlucky souls who have been caught up in a web of deceit from a man who governs by emotion; not from understanding and concern for the very freedoms which are being taken from us.
Whose freedom is most threatened? It is our own democracy and human rights. And we blindly acquiesce like sheep to the slaughter.
Now we learn that those who die in Iraq and Afghanistan are being labeled on their tombstones as dying in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom. What a farce! An honest title should be they died in “George Bush’s War!”
What does Romans 12:19 say about that?

But my dear, you’ll have all of these lovely people available in Texas to serve you those wonderful juleps of yours, and chowder up at the Cape, of course. So it can’t be all bad. And remember how good some of them look in white gloves! Naturally, too, with all of this extra help ready to work, the rates will be a little lower too. You might be able to get several at a very reasonable cost. You could even get another chauffer or two…so you wouldn’t have to bother with that husband…if you catch my meaning, and I’m so sure that you do. So don’t bother your beautiful mind about this either. Chin up, old girl. Persevere!

So tonight another one of Barbara “Don’t Call Me Jennifer” Bush’s idiot grandchildren has been arrested. This time it’s Gov. Jeb “I’m really smarter than he is” Bush’s son. So, let’s see now: forgetting about the Idiot Prince,”W”, and his drug and alcohol problems for a moment, we have “W”‘s two daughters forging false ID cards and indulging in underage drinking (with the Secret Service present, no less); Jeb’s daughter forging drug prescriptions; Jeb’s son arrested for drunken behavior and resisting arrest; Jeb’s wife charged with failure to declare thousands of dollars worth of imported goods on her customs forms. It’s no wonder this bizarre, disfunctional family left the east coast. They think they’re odd behavior might go unnoticed down south. What a bunch of tossers. Every one a loser, starting with the Moronic Matriarch herself.

The Bush family has wealth which means they have money, power, and influence, they can choose to “work” or not. Barbara Bush just made a statement that proves how far removed her entire family and other in our country who are blind to the plight of poor Americans. The wealthy seek every opportunity to exploit the poor. During the Regan era Republicans embraced the wealthy and their needs (tax breaks, etc) stating that their well being would some how trickle down to those who are middle class and poor. This is a flawed concept and just a cover up in a capitalistic society that feels that some will always be poor because they are simply not equipped with the intelligence, ambition, and determination to achieve sucess and get out of poverty.
We know that wealth has nothing to do with intelligence, everything Bush has was inherited or handed to him including his presidency. Has anyone seen Cheney’s background, he spent one year at Yale, rarely attending class; later went to some community college, then a University in Wisconsin and the only reason he was “motivated” to go to college was to escaped the draft. Apparently it also inspired him to marry and have kids. (Check the facts in Rolling Stone Magazine’s website, or google Dick Cheney) At least this proves that being poor, underachieving college students (for those of us who are privileged) does not mean “we” will be destined to a life of poverty or middle class life!!! LOL

  87. Kris Nelson says:

Galloway stated during the debate with Hitchens that Barbara Bush said “they’ve never had it so good”.

    She did not.

She stated that compared to where they were after the flood and the hurricane they were lucky to be in the dome rather than living outside in the elements.

How hard a stretch is it to see that? It isn’t nearly the stretch it is to see how she was saying “they’ve never had it so good,” when that isn’t what she said at all.

Will this make people realise that this government doesnt’ care about them. Never did, and never will. And why is that!? I promise you all, next week Baba Bush’s comment will be forgotten, just like the rest of the stupid and incensitive remarks, and LIES we’ve been hearing for years. 94. John L. says:

Nah, no one’s angry at all.

Things are going great! Look all around you and behold the beauty of our society. We’re in great shape!

The richest of our citizens, now having their wealth returned to them that the government so viciously stole year after year are now carrying the weight of this country’s economy. They are taking the windfalls of their taxcuts and investing so heavily into our future and helping building a solid base where everyone gets a fair shake. This is why the economy is booming so hard – why the gap between the rich and poor is shrinking every day……

All around us are enemies who cower at our might. When they attack us, we attack someone else completely unrelated, except perhaps by ethnicity – leaving them to NEVER KNOW WHO we will retaliate against. This is why you see rogue nations and crazed terrorist groups, one after another, standing down, apologizing and begging for our favor. I don’t think we have to worry about them anymore. WHAT A BRILLIANT STRATEGY!

We’re getting a handle on that pesky free speech issue. No, we’re not taking away that right – just regulating…. no, ORGANIZING it…. so that it can be more palatable for everyone. Who knew that ‘free speech’ is best exercised in a clandestine cubbyhole squired away from the eyes of the public. No more are we subjected to dirty hippies and their complaints! This, again…….. beautiful.

And what with incredible tax breaks being given to energy companies in times of record profits…. certainly with this much money they’re going to build up some things, right? I’ve seen companies built from the ground floor and it’s obvious – sometimes you have to give them extra to build their business infrastructure – otherwise, they just don’t bother. Why else would a business have any interest in building up its infrastructure?

New Orleans is sure to be rebuilt faster now that the President has taken the opportunity to suspend the 1931 Davis-Bacon act. Haliburton will have an easier time getting men to work for below minimum…… hell, below standards anywhere….. And they’ll take that extra money and do something nice, I’m sure.

If only I had known that this is what a Republican majority could do…..

    You must be very proud.

And the President *IS* a VERY SMART MAN, certainly. Indeed. Most definitely.

I’m not angry at all. I’m damned impressed. I can’t wait to see what the Republicans have in store for us. I’ve only grazed the tip of the iceberg with the things I’ve mentioned…… Imagine, the future……

But hell, I got your sarcasm – “What is one to do if not rant against republicans!?! For we are TRULY the only people who actually know the truth! Ugh!…..Yes, there are no poor republicans, no middle class. All republicans are scum of the earth, hateful, ignorant creatures!”
